Biography

Avery John was born on June 18, 1975 in the smallest borough of Trinidad, Point Fortin which is located in the south-western part of Trinidad. John, a left-footed, rugged tackler and uncompromising defender, had the ability to match the fastest forwards with his speed and physical aggression.

Being from a large family of modest means, John started playing soccer barefooted and barebacked on the road. He knew his parents could not afford to lavish money on education and his worst fear was that he would be stuck in Trinidad forever, with his ambitions left unfulfilled.

John attended Vessigny Government Secondary School and then Presentation College in Trinidad before moving on to Yavapai College in Arizona.  His footballing skills were sufficient to attract the attention of Trinidad’s youth coaches and earn him a scholarship to the American University in Washington DC. He graduated from the American University in 1998 with a degree in Business Administration, specializing in International Marketing.

John made his international debut for T&T on July 28, 1996 against Honduras in an International Friendly which ended in a 0-0 score. While in the United States, John played college football for Yavapai College in Arizona and AmericanUniversity in Washington, DC. In his four seasons with American University, John was named First Team All-Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) and Second Team All-South Atlantic Region in 1997. In that same year, he helped win the CAA Championship and bring the team into the National CAA Quarterfinals. After graduation, John played with Raleigh Flyers and Maryland Mania, both of the USA.

John then joined the New Orleans Storm of the United Soccer Leagues in July 1998 but was not included in the final eleven. Then he had two spells with Bohemian FC of Ireland, first in September 1999 and then in 2001. He worked under three different managers and became something of a cult figure in Ireland, with several songs being written in his honour. In 2000, John had stints with Shelbourne United of Ireland, Boston Bulldogs and New Orleans Storm of the USA.

In September 2002, John left Bohemian FC to sign with Longford Town of Ireland, where he stayed until August 2003. While contracted to Longford Town, John played for South Africa’s Orlando Pirates in July 2003. John is no stranger to controversy and was threatened with a worldwide Fifa ban for breach of contract after playing for South African side Orlando Pirates, when he was still contracted to Longford Town. When Longford learnt what was happening they terminated the player’s contract. After more than six months out of the game, he resurfaced in England, where he had a trial with Wycombe Wanderers.

John’s attempts to sign for clubs in England and France were beset by many problems.  Work permit issues and restrictions on the number of overseas players scotched his efforts to win contracts at Paris St. Germain, RSAP & Bastia in France as well as Colchester United in England. In early 2004, John trained with Birmingham City.  He hoped to sign with the Club due to the unavailability of players stricken by injury. However, this was not to be, as the players in question made rapid recoveries. A desperate John then contacted Nicol, his former manager from the Boston Bulldogs who had taken over at the Revolution.  He informed John that they were short of players in his position. John signed for the Revs on May 19 and stayed until November 2007 and received widespread praise for his performances. John was a regular member of the starting lineup and was a member of the team that won the U.S. Open Cup Winner’s Medal.

Miami FC of the USA signed John in May 2008.  He remained there until September 2008, with only 15 appearances for the team. John fitted in well at Miami FC and survived two-a-day practices and multiple games in limited days. He worked out a communication system with his Portuguese-speaking coach and adjusted to the humid South Florida weather. He then signed with DC United also of the USA in April 2009 and remained until January 2010.

John has represented T&T at the 1998, 2002, 2006 and 2010 FIFA World Cup Qualifying Campaign. His most notable football highlight is that he represented T&T at the 2006 FIFA World Cup Finals in Germany. Notoriously he is known as the first person to be shown a red card (two yellows) in that tournament, as a consequence of two infringements against Sweden’s Christian Wilhelmsson. He earned the first yellow card in the first 15 minutes of the game and a second yellow in the second half of the game. This automatically resulted in a red being shown, therefore was ineligible to play the second game of the tournament against England.

John was also on the T&T squad that won the 2001 Copa Caribe and the team that placed 3rd in the 2005 Caribbean Cup. He has represented T&T in many international friendlies against teams such as Japan, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Wales and many others. Currently, John resides in Boston, Massachusetts in the USA.

Avery John, who is no relation to well-known footballer Stern John, lists Maradonna, Pele and Franco Baresi as his favourite players. He hosts the annual Avery John League in his hometown of Vance River in southern Trinidad, providing the uniforms and equipment needed with the help of generous sponsors.  Avery John may not have set professional football alight, but he has certainly trod a varied and interesting road from rather humble beginnings.
